I design learning experiences that empower learners through authentic application, purposeful technology integration, and accessible instructional design.
I believe meaningful learning occurs when instruction is purposeful, authentic, and accessible to every learner. Technology has the power to transform learning experiences, but only when it is intentionally selected to support instructional goals rather than becoming the focus of instruction. As an ESOL educator and aspiring instructional designer, I strive to create learning environments that encourage collaboration, critical thinking, and authentic application while reducing unnecessary barriers to learning. My goal is to design experiences that prepare learners to confidently transfer new knowledge and skills to real-world situations.
My experiences as both a classroom teacher and graduate student have strengthened my belief that effective instructional design begins with understanding learners rather than choosing technology. Every design decision should be guided by clear learning outcomes, learner needs, and meaningful engagement. Throughout this program, I learned that technology is most valuable when it supports learning, reduces barriers, and encourages learners to actively construct knowledge instead of passively receiving information. More importantly, I discovered that effective instructional design is less about creating attractive digital resources and more about designing purposeful learning experiences that help learners achieve meaningful outcomes.
Authentic learning has become the foundation of my instructional philosophy. I believe learners develop deeper understanding when they solve meaningful problems that resemble situations they will encounter beyond the learning environment. Greene (2020) explains that stories engage learners by placing them in realistic situations that require thoughtful decisions and meaningful action. This principle guided the development of my Scaffolding Lab, an interactive Articulate Rise 360 module created to help teachers support multilingual learners using the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) framework. Rather than presenting information through slides or readings alone, the module places participants in realistic classroom scenarios where they analyze language demands, select instructional scaffolds, and justify their decisions. I wanted participants to leave the module prepared to apply what they learned in their own classrooms rather than simply remember instructional strategies.
The Community of Inquiry framework has further shaped how I think about online learning. Meaningful learning occurs when cognitive, social, and teaching presence work together to support learner engagement (Garrison et al., 2000). This understanding influenced the discussion activities I designed for the module. Instead of asking participants to answer questions with predetermined responses, I created authentic teaching scenarios that encouraged educators to explain their reasoning, compare instructional decisions, and build on one another's ideas. I also used artificial intelligence as a brainstorming tool to generate multiple discussion prompts before refining them based on instructional goals, learner needs, and opportunities for meaningful collaboration. This experience reinforced that thoughtful instructional design depends on professional judgment rather than technology alone.

Technology plays an important role in my philosophy, but instructional goals should always determine technology choices. Bean (2023) emphasizes that instructional designers begin by identifying learner needs before selecting digital tools. Throughout this program, I evaluated multiple learning management systems before ultimately choosing Google Classroom for my professional development course. Although other platforms offered additional features, Google Classroom best supported my audience because it provided clear organization, accessibility, and long-term sustainability without requiring a paid subscription. I also integrated Google Slides to provide interactive learning opportunities and Articulate Rise 360 to create scenario-based experiences that encouraged authentic application. These decisions reinforced my belief that technology should enhance learning rather than drive instructional decisions.

Accessibility is another principle that guides every design decision I make. Universal Design for Learning encourages instructional designers to anticipate learner variability and provide multiple ways for learners to engage with content and demonstrate understanding (CAST, 2024). While developing my Google Classroom course, I intentionally organized content into numbered learning modules, maintained consistent navigation, incorporated authentic classroom images, added optional audio support, and provided guidance before interactive activities so participants could focus on learning rather than navigating technology. These seemingly small decisions significantly improved the learner experience while reducing unnecessary cognitive demands.
My understanding of adult learning has also evolved throughout this program. Adult learners bring valuable experiences, established professional practices, and immediate instructional challenges to every learning environment. Because of this, I believe professional learning should respect learners' expertise while providing opportunities to solve authentic problems that connect directly to their work. This philosophy shaped every aspect of my professional development course by emphasizing classroom application, collaborative discussion, reflection, and opportunities for teachers to immediately implement new instructional strategies within their own classrooms.

Perhaps the most valuable lesson I have learned is that effective instructional design is an ongoing process of reflection and continuous improvement. Every major project benefited from instructor feedback, peer review, usability testing, and multiple revisions. Revising the organization of my learning management system, refining the visual design of my course, strengthening learner engagement, improving accessibility, and enhancing AI-generated discussion prompts demonstrated that thoughtful revision consistently produces stronger learning experiences. Rather than viewing feedback as criticism, I now see it as an essential part of creating instruction that better serves learners.
As educational technology continues to evolve, new tools—including artificial intelligence—will continue to influence how learning experiences are designed. I welcome these innovations, but I believe they should complement, not replace, the expertise of the instructional designer. This perspective aligns with the course emphasis on using generative AI as a thinking partner while relying on human judgment to evaluate the accuracy, reliability, and appropriateness of its output (American College of Education [ACE], 2026). Technology can accelerate parts of the design process, yet meaningful learning still depends on thoughtful decisions grounded in research, learner needs, accessibility, and authentic educational experiences.
As I continue to grow as an instructional designer, I hope to create learning experiences that are not only engaging and effective but also meaningful to the people who use them. Whether I am designing professional development for educators or instructional experiences for multilingual learners, I want every instructional decision to reflect authenticity, accessibility, and purposeful technology integration. When learners leave a course feeling confident, capable, and ready to apply what they have learned, I know the design has accomplished its purpose. That belief will continue to guide every instructional decision I make throughout my career.
